While low levels of mold spores are normal and usually harmless, problems arise when mold begins to grow unchecked. As colonies develop, they increase the spore concentration in the air, which can become harmful to your health and compromise your home’s structural integrity over time.
Common household molds come in many colors: green, white, black, orange, pink, or purple. They are most often found in basements, around leaking pipes, near washing machines, behind walls, and in attics or crawl spaces or anywhere that water damage or poor ventilation creates the right conditions.
Mold is a naturally occurring fungus that thrives in dark, damp, and humid environments. It reproduces by releasing microscopic spores into the air—spores that are always present around us, both indoors and outdoors. When these spores land on surfaces with enough moisture and organic material, they begin to grow and form visible colonies.

Black Mold
Identifying black mold visually can be difficult, as many molds share similar coloring. That’s why laboratory testing is often needed to confirm its presence. And remember, not all toxic molds are black, and not all black molds are toxic. Appearance alone isn’t a reliable indicator of danger.
**If you suspect black mold, it’s critical to have the area inspected by professionals who can assess the severity and recommend appropriate next steps.
Black mold starts to appear a few days after a moisture event, typically following the early growth of less harmful mold species. If moisture remains, more aggressive molds like Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, and Fusarium take hold. Black mold usually has a slimy, dark green or black appearance and tends to grow in patches.
Black mold—specifically Stachybotrys chartarum—is one of the most concerning species of mold due to its ability to produce mycotoxins, harmful compounds that can lead to serious health problems. It commonly grows on water-damaged materials high in cellulose, such as drywall, ceiling tiles, cardboard, and wood.

Health Concerns
For these individuals, even a small amount of mold or mycotoxins can lead to debilitating symptoms and long-term health effects. If you or a loved one is struggling with unexplained symptoms, especially those that improve when away from home, mold may be the missing piece of the puzzle.
When it comes to mold, health concerns are often the most urgent and with good reason. Mold exposure can cause a wide range of symptoms, from mild allergies to severe, chronic illness. Certain types of mold release mycotoxins, which are toxic compounds that can disrupt immune function, trigger inflammation, and affect the nervous system.
At HNST, we work with many mold-sensitive individuals who are especially impacted by even low levels of exposure. These include clients living with:

Mold Myths
While Stachybotrys is known for its toxicity, many other molds can be allergenic or harmful, regardless of their color. Don’t judge mold by its appearance alone.

Mold spores are naturally present in the air and can never be fully removed. The goal is to manage moisture and control growth, not to sterilize your home.
Bleach might clean mold from smooth surfaces, but it won’t penetrate porous materials like drywall or wood. Surface cleaning doesn’t address what’s hiding behind walls or under floors.
Airborne spores are invisible to the naked eye and can be just as harmful. Hidden mold behind walls or under carpets is often the real danger.
Mold spores remain allergenic and potentially toxic even when dormant. Inactive spores can still trigger immune responses and respiratory issues.
Why You Need an Inspection
Before buying a home: Avoid costly surprises and ensure the property is safe for your family.
Before selling a home: Disclose findings proactively and fix issues before they impact your sale.
After a flood or water leak: Mold can begin to grow within 24–48 hours. Don’t wait to take action.
If you smell a musty odor: That’s often the first sign of hidden mold growth behind walls or under flooring.
If you or someone in your household has symptoms: Chronic fatigue, breathing problems, or skin irritation can often be traced back to mold.
Before and after mold remediation: Testing provides a clear picture of what’s been cleaned and whether further work is needed.
At HNST Mold Inspections, we tailor our process to your needs—especially if you or your family members are mold-sensitive. We offer advanced testing methods and partner with AIHA-accredited labs to deliver accurate, science-backed results you can trust.
